Marine Log - November 2007 - (Page 22) Update JAXPORT inks deal for new box terminal Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) has inked an initial agreement with Hanjin Shipping Co., Ltd. to develop a $360 million container terminal in Jacksonville, Fla. The proposed terminal will be JAXPORT’s fifth marine terminal and Hanjin’s first dedicated operation on the east coast. The signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) allows contract negotiations regarding construction, financing and operations of the facility, to move forward. The MOU calls for the 170-acre Hanjin terminal to begin operations in 2011, with capacity to handle one million TEU’s annually. The terminal is expected to generate at least $1 billion in economic activity in Northeast Florida and create thousands of new jobs. Hanjin is Korea’s largest, and one of the world’s biggest container carriers, moving more than 100 million tons of cargo annually while operating in more than 50 countries. INLAND • COASTAL • OFFSHORE • DEEPSEA Bollinger completes ATB conversion Bollinger Gulf Repair, L.L.C. and Bollinger Algiers, L.L.C, have completed the retrofit and conversion of a Bouchard Coastwise Management Co. barge and tug, to an articulated tug and barge (ATB) unit utilizing the Intercon Coupler System. The 446-foot, black oil Barge B. No.195, renamed Barge B. No.295, was transformed at Bollinger Gulf Repair from a single hull to double hull vessel to meet the requirements of OPA'90. The B. No. 295 measures 468 ft x 85.5 ft x 38.1 ft, with 16 cargo tanks. A new ballast system was installed, and her stern was modified with the matching Intercon ladder to accept the bow of the 127ft tug Bouchard Girls. The Bouchard Girls was retrofitted with ram assemblies of the Intercon system at Bollinger Algiers, where it underwent its conversions, receiving a keel cooled Detroit Diesel 8V-71 generator set producing 99 kW as back up for powering the Intercon hydraulic system and main generator. Bollinger currently has additional OPA’90 new builds in various production stages for Bouchard. The OPA-compliant Barge B.
