Marine Log - December 2008 - (Page 40) SHOWCASE COATINGS Cruise Line wants a second helping of Ecospeed After the successful application of Ecospeed on one of its vessels two years ago, an undisclosed cruise line has had the 100% non-toxic coating applied to another of its ships. Ecospeed is a once in a lifetime coating system that is guaranteed for ten years. Unlike conventional paints, Ecospeed reduces the need to repaint the vessel, reduces fuel consumption in addition to reducing cost. It also eliminates ocean pollution. The coating creates a durable and impermeable barrier for protection against corrosion and marine fouling. The hull of the vessel before and after the application of Ecospeed SherwinWilliams’ Water-based Acrolon 100 This past summer, SherwinWilliams Protective and Marine Coatings, Cleveland, Ohio, introduced Waterbased Acrolon 100. Waterbased Acrolon 100 is an environmentally friendly Acrylic Polyurethane. It is suitable for steel tank exteriors and competes favorably with solvent-based urethanes and retains its appearance over a wide range of chemical weather, and mechanical conditions. According to W. Doni Riddle, vice president, SherwinWilliams Protective and Marine Coatings, “Waterbased Acrolon 100 offers the best of both worlds — OTC compliance and HAPS free, coupled with high performance that can be utilized in a wide variety of industrial and marine applications.” In addition, the company introduced Polylon HP Polyurethane, a two component, low VOC polyesteraliphatic urethane coating that provides a high gloss and excellent chemical resistance. Advanced Polymer Coatings introduces new Marine Line coating system At this year’s SMM 2008 show, Advanced Polymer Coatings (APC) introduced a brand new MarineLine coating system using innovative nano technology. Marine Line 784N (the “N” stands for nano) will have the same high chemical resistance as the current MarineLine 784 system. Used by more than 300 cargo tankers and protecting more than 2 million m , the MarineLine 784 system is a high cross-linked polymer coating that assures product purity while resisting corrosion. The nanotechnology in the new coating leads to enhanced propogation, which limits internal stress cracking. Additionally, the nanoelastomers in the coating include high fracture 2 energy—providing greater toughness and impact resistance—and increased elongation. According to Donald J. Keehan, APC Chairman, the increased elongation of 17-19% surpasses IBC code regulations that require tank coatings to have equal or better elongation properties than the steel substrate. Cathelco Jotun protects three new carriers from hull fouling Cathelco Jotun is providing a complete protection package for three new self-unloading carriers being built for EShips Oldendorff Logistics—a joint venture between Abu Dhabibased Emirates Ship Investment Company and German-based Oldendroff Carriers. Vessels traveling in the warm waters of the Arabian Gulf are prone to the effects of biofouling caused by barnacles and mussels. Cathelco Jotun will also supply the barges with a specialized anti-fouling system to prevent crustacea from settling and grow- ing on the internal surfaces of the thruster tunnels. In addition, each of the vessels’ will be protected from corrosion by four thrusters Cathelco Jotun. www.marinelog.com 40 MARINE LOG DECEMBER 2008 http://www.marinelog.com
