Marine Log - December 2008 - (Page 42) Technews TECHNEWS GE introduces new L250 Diesel GE Transporation, Erie, Pa., recently broadened its line of medium-speed diesel engines with the L250. The L250 can provide fuel savings of up to 9% when compared to other medium-speed diesel engines, and can be upgraded to meet future EPA Tier III requirements—it already has received a Tier II emissions certification. According to John Manison, manager of GE Transportation’s Marine Business, “The L2500’s turbocharger, which can be flexibly mounted at either end of the engine—coupled with a narrower frame— make for easy installation and maintainability, especially if customers are using the engine for repowering applications.” The L250 has a six-cylinder configuration offering a continuous output ranging from 1,498 kW/2,009 hp at 900 rev/min to 1,748 kW/2,344 hp at 1,050 rev/min. Its eight cylinder output ranges from 1,998 kW/2,679 hp at 900 rev/min to 2,330 kW/ 3,125 hp at 1,050 rev/min. Some of the components of the new engine are derived from GE’s V250 line, such as its camshafts, fuel systems, exhaust manifold, power assemblies, bearings and turbocharger. The L250 also features new attributes like the engine’s air and oil filters, fuel pump, low and high temperature thermostatic valves and seawater pumps. www.getransportation.com Liferaft Systems for two British Aircraft Carriers Liferaft Systems Australia (LSA) secured a contract worth about A$7 million to supply Marine Evacuation Systems to the U.K. Ministry of Defence (MoD). The life rafts will be used on two new British aircraft carriers, the HMS Queen Elizabeth and the HMS Prince of Wales—each is 280 m long x 70 m wide and can carry 40 aircrafts and a crew of 1,500. LSA will equip the aircraft carriers with inflatable evacuation slides measuring 12 x 20 m long and 60 x 100 person inflatable liferafts. The number of systems for each carrier was not released. www.liferaftsystems.com.au 42 MARINE LOG DECEMBER 2008 www.marinelog.com http://www.getransportation.com http://www.mmcintl.com http://www.liferaftsystems.com.au http://www.mmcintl.com http://www.marinelog.com
