Marine Log - December 2008 - (Page 9) Production begins on remaining UAE Navy corvettes New 3,000 hp tug for Vane Brothers Chesapeake Shipbuilding, Salisbury, Md., recently delivered the 3,000HP tug Sassafras to Vane Brothers, Baltimore, Md. The Sassafras Class is the first of eight in the series and will support the company’s inland, brown water and coastal towing operations. Propulsion for the tug is supplied by two Caterpillar 3512 engines with 6:1 reverse reduction gears to conventional twin shafts. These new tugs have upper and lower pilot houses. The Sassafras features JonRie’s state-of-the-art Series 500 Towing Winch with its independent drive level wind. The winch has a line pull of 90,000lbs., 30fpm and the capacity to spool 2,100ft. of 1 inch cable. On the after deck, the tug has a JonRie Series 421 hydraulic capstan. A bu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) has begun production on the last of six Baynunah corvettes being built for the UAE Navy as part of the region’s largest ever naval construction programs. The highly sophisticated 72m Baynunyah Class vessels are equipped with cutting-edge combat systems and are capable of performing a wide range of military operations. The class was designed by France-based Constructions Mecaniques De Nor- Three of the five corvettes under construction at Abu Dhabi Ship Building mandie (CMN). The first of the class is currently being outfitted at CMN’s Cerbourg Yard. Bisso Towboat launches third Z-drive tug B isso Towboat Co. New Orleans, La., recently launched Michael S., a 4,000 hp reverse Z-drive tractor tug (photo inset) at Main Iron Works, Houma, La. The third Z-drive tug to be constructed by Main Iron Works for Bisso, the Michael S is fitted with two Caterpillar 3516 B main engines that drive two Ulstein Aquamaster US 205 MK2 azimuthing Zdrives. In addition, Main Iron Works will start the construction of a fourth Zdrive tug for Bisso next summer. Bisso Marine also received ISM certification from ABS for its Safety Management Systems (SMS) in relation to its office and tugs. The company is the only Mississippi River-based ship-assist company to achieve this certification. Marlink purchases WaveCall from SeaTel The world’s largest maritime satellite communication provider, Marlink, purchased the WaveCall brand from SeaTel. The new WaveCall by Marklink will offer a greater coverage area, high-speed connectivity, simultaneous voice and data services, prepaid calling cards and flexible billing. http://www.eagle.org
