Railway Track & Structures - January 2009 - (Page 25) BNSF 2009 M/W Numbers Rail: 173,000 net tons new, 40,600 relay. Ties: 3,429,289 total. 3,267,885 wood, 149,404 concrete, 12,000 plastic. Surfacing: 14,692 miles. BNSF expects to complete work in 2009 on a major intermodal facility adjacent to its Tennessee Yard in Memphis. The railroad acquired a 170-acre, 8,000-foot-long parcel. Forty-four buildings that were on the property have been torn down, grading work and subsurface work is done and most of the cranes have been assembled and are upright The yard will have widestand cranes to load and unload, as well as two stacking cranes, parking for both containers and trailers and an Automated Gate System to smooth entry and exit for truckers picking up or dropping off containers or trailers. For 2009, CN plans to install 55,000 net tons of new rail and 50,000 tons of relay rail. The 2008 budget called for 105,000 net tons of new rail and 25,000 tons of used rail. In 2009, CN plans to install 1,750,00 wood ties and 50,000 concrete ties. In 2008, CN planned to install 1.8 million wood ties and 35,200 concrete ties. The railroad plans to place 1.5 million tons of ballast behind tie programs and for out-of-face surfacing. CN will also install 125 turnouts. The 2009 focus is on CN’s Mega Gang program, where maintenance-ofway forces have six-to-eight-hour work windows on key routes to allow for the installation of 3,500 to 4,500 ties per day. Pioneered by David Ferryman, CN engineering vice president, the railroad points out these single work windows on the extended transcontinental routes have been extremely successful in 2008, leading to a reduced installation cost per tie. In addition, CN schedules secondary work in the shadow of the primary window to achieve further savings overall. The operational impact through improved fluidity of operations as a result of fewer temporary slow order minutes has allowed CN to maintain service levels to customers. Canadian Pacific Railway Canadian Pacific Railway had a $530 million capital program in 2008 and, at press time, expected to spend the same amount in 2009. On the C&S side, CPR plans to spend $308.5 million, up from $295 million in 2008. This year, CPR plans to install 60,302 net tons of new rail and 7,273 net tons of relay rail, down from 75,160 new and 16,080 relay in 2008. The railroad plans to put in 748,753 wood crossties, 736,253 new and 12,500 relay In 2008, CPR installed 1,101,262 crossties, 1,078,902 wood and CN 2009 M/W Numbers Rail: 55,000 net tons new, 50,000 relay. Ties: 1,800,000 total. 1,750,000 wood, 50,000 concrete. Surfacing: 1.5 million tons of ballast. CN CN declined to provide a capital dollar forecast at this time. www.rtands.com Railway Track & Structures January 2009 25 http://www.rtands.com
