In 2009, UP plans to install 4,520,000 ties, including 3.6 million new wood ties, 400,000 new concrete ties, 150,000 plastic/alternative ties and 370,000 relay ties. The prior year, UP put in 4,066,000 total ties, including 3,327,000 new wood ties, 384,000 new concrete ties, 123,000 new plastic/alternative ties and 232,000 relay ties. UP surfaced 8,600 miles of track in 2008 and plans to do the same amount in 2009. Major projects on UP in 2009 include completion of the Boone High Bridge in Iowa and 26 miles of double track in the Southwest. new rail and 1,200 miles of relay rail. The railroad plans to install 110,000 new wood ties this year after putting in 112,000 new wood ties this past year. MRL will surface 260 miles of track in 2009, the same as in the prior year. MRL has committed $2.5 million to Phase 2 of a major bridge project. NS 2009 M/W Numbers Rail: 58,046 net tons new, 21,272 relay. Ties: 2,659,780 total. 2,461,780 new wood, 198,000 relay wood. Surfacing: 5,382 miles. UP 2009 M/W Numbers Rail: 143,000 net tons new, 48,000 relay. Ties: 4,520,000 total. 3,600,000 wood, 400,000 concrete, 150,000 plastic/alternative and 370,000 relay wood. Surfacing: 8,600 miles. Norfolk Southern Norfolk Southern’s engineering capital and maintenance budget for 2009 is $1.258 billion, up from $1.229 billion in 2008. The C&S expenses for 2009 should be $264 million, an increase from $236 million the previous year. NS plans to install 58,046 net tons of new rail and 21,272 net tons of relay rail compared to 65,734 net tons of new rail and 23,157 net tons of relay rail in 2008. The railroad plans to install 2,659,780 total wood ties in 2009, 2,461,780 new and 198,000 relay. In 2008, NS installed 2,796,951 total wood ties, 2,521,951 new and 275,000 relay. In 2009, NS plans to surface 5,382 miles of track, up from 5,175 miles the previous year. For 2009, the Heartland Corridor continues to be a major project for NS. The railroad has completed work on seven tunnels—all four Virginia tunnels and three in West Virginia— and is working on nine tunnels that will be complete in early 2009. NS is scheduled to begin work on 10 tunnels in the first half of 2009. Union Pacific Union Pacific’s figures for capital and maintenance were not available at press time. This year, UP plans to put down 143,000 net tons of new rail and 48,000 net tons of relay rail.
