Railway Track & Structures - February 2009 - (Page 4) INDUSTRY TODAY BNSF plans $2.7-billion capital program in 2009 BNSF plans a 2009 capital commitment program of $2.7 billion, which is expected to be approximately $150 million lower than 2008. BNSF currently expects to spend $1.9 billion to refresh track, signal systems, structures, and freight cars and to upgrade technologies. The company also anticipates acquiring approximately 350 locomotives at a cost of about $675 million. These locomotives are about 15 percent more fuel efficient than the locomotives they will replace. “Our 2009 capital program reflects a continued focus on ensuring our infrastructure remains strong and improving the efficiency of our operations,” said Matthew Rose, BNSF chairman, president and chief executive officer. “Because of the significant volume declines associated with the economy, the expansion portion of the 2009 capital program is minimal, reflecting ongoing work on projects already started.” BNSF dispatched four maintenance crews to replace rail and ties between Galveston and Temple, and Alvord and Rhome, Tex. Approximately 130 BNSF employees will work until mid-February replacing more than 50,000 ties and almost 22 track miles of rail. The total cost of these projects is about $10 million. Crews will utilize equipment such as cranes, welders and ballast tampers to replace rail at a rate of almost one mile a day. Earlier, BNSF sent seven maintenance crews to replace rail and ties between Clovis and Jarales, N.M.; Baca, N.M., and Winslow, Ariz.; and Crookton and Griffith, Ariz. Two hundred fifty BNSF employees and contractors will work until April replacing approximately 150,000 ties and almost 150 track miles of rail. The total cost of these three projects is more than $30 million. In late January, BNSF began replacing almost 30 track miles of rail and 15,000 railroad ties in its Thayer subdivision between Teed, Mo., and Memphis, Tenn. Almost 250 BNSF employees will work until late April replacing approximately 15,000 ties and 30 track miles of rail at a rate of almost one mile a day. The total cost of this project is about $12.75 million.
