Railway Track & Structures - March 2009 - (Page 27) Inspecting for BUGS In warm climates, railroads must be alert to potential damage from Formosan termites. by James W. Austin, Grady J. Glenn and Roger E. Gold,Texas A&M University F ormosan termite populations represent a threat to wooden bridges, pilings and more across the southern and southeastern U.S. This case study outlines six specific railroad bridges and documents the remedial control efforts to eliminate Formosan termites from these bridges. The Formosan Subterranean Termite, an exotic pest from China, has become a major pest in many states. Current estimated costs associated with FST in the south exceed $1 billion annually and the projected damages from continued FST presence will far exceed this in the years to come. In general, these subterranean termites have a penchant for hard woods, particularly when directly in contact with the soil. Current preservation techniques, i.e., pressurized treatment of rail timber with creosote, do not prevent FST from entering the wood and exacting damage to interior compartments. The examples outlined in this study are specific, but are not limited exclusively to U.S. railroad bridges and/or railroad ties as the impact from FST has been far more extensive than current literature reflects. This study addresses specific population reduction practices through the use of baiting systems detection technologies. Materials and methods A series of train bridges in southeast Texas were identified as having FST infestations present in areas where FST problems were known by Class 1 railroad inspectors. Researchers at Texas A&M were contacted by a Class 1 railroad to assist with the identification and detection of FST, and asked to make treatment recommendations based on findings.
