Railway Track & Structures - April 2008 - (Page 25) Managing more material Material handling When it comes to material handling, one word sums up what railroads want: More. Managing more material The Brandt Rail Tool has the capability to move and brake railcars. N orth American railroads want more out of their material handling equipment: More productive machines carrying more capacity and guaranteeing more safety. Suppliers are meeting the challenge of more, while keeping an eye on work windows and budgets. Auto Truck “The railroads’ requirements are still safety and productivity,” said Greg Haugen, director railroad sales at Auto Truck Group. “Specifically, the cranes have larger capacity to handle heavier track and structures components. Trailers are being added to accommodate the larger loads that [can] no longer be carried on the truck.” In line with the industry focus on safety and productivity, Auto Truck is changing installation and system designs to make the hydraulic and electric control systems more reliable to reduce downtime. Haugen also noted the prevalence of crane radio remote controls. “The productivity has been improved because the electronic radio system allows multiple functions to operate simultaneously. We have one crane manufacturer that has discontinued the tethered remote controls and supplies only radio remote controls,” said Haugen. Haugen said the company is also being requested to assist the railroads in developing training material that can be readily reviewed by new operators. “The departing employee training the incoming employee doesn’t adequately address the needed training requirements. The railroads are seeing a change in the workforce that results in many new employees; they need training to replace the experience. The workforce is also more mobile and that causes increased need to by Mischa Wanek-Libman, assistant editor www.rtands.com Railway Track & Structures April 2008 25 http://www.rtands.com
