Railway Track & Structures - April 2008 - (Page 28) Managing more material Material handling Turner continued, “For all the success GREX has had with the Slot and SPS, the company is still best known for its ability to distribute rock. With solutions like the Dump Train, Spoils Receiver System and Solaris/GateSync, GREX offers its customers the ultimate in aggregate delivery. GREX and its customers continue to enjoy success with the Spoils Receiver, working in tandem with an undercutter. In this application, the SRS receives spoils from the undercutter on a belt configuration that distributes the spoils throughout the consist via an overhead conveyor. Once the SRS is fully loaded, it can efficiently move the materials off-site and offload in a traditional Dump Train configuration. “The ability to develop solutions to pressing problems is what has proven GREX a valued, trusted and reliable partner in the railroad industry,” said Turner. “GREX is constantly striving to meet the demands of this evolving industry and the company’s material handling equipment provides customers useful tools that can be utilized in a variety of applications. We say, ‘It’s a better way to work.’” Guzzler The family of hi-rail-capable industrial vacuum loaders (Classic, Ace and NX) at Guzzler Manufacturing, Inc., now features extendable and telescopic booms, increasing the effective reach of the vacuum hose, allowing materials further from the tracks to be recovered. “Railroads continue to seek our very popular continuous offloading systems, which enable offloading of materials from railcars into barrels or drums while they are vacuuming,” said Tim Lee, product manager at Guzzler. According to Lee, there is an increasing focus on environmental and safety regulation. Standard door props are now on all Guzzler half-doors. Lee notes that these are required as part of safety lockout procedures to prevent accidental closure of the rear doors during routine maintenance or cleanout. “As fuel and raw materiel costs continue to climb and the possibility of a recession looms, the transportation industry is challenged with saving money, while maintaining service. Efficiency and conservation become critical. Guzzler hirail trucks can easily and quickly travel or be transported to any rail site that requires cleanup and the recovered materiel easily dispensed for recycling or disposal,” said Lee. Herzog Herzog Contracting Corp. has developed a rail unloading machine (RUM) mounted on a specially-designed hi-rail truck, which replaces the conventional puller car used when unloading rail trains. “This unique design eliminates the use of splice bars, cables and ‘A’ frames, along with other miscellaneous items used in this type operation. No employees are required on the ground, making for a much safer operation. Two Herzog operators unload the rails from the truck control cab using a telescopic crane that pulls each rail into a powered roller box, then into two adjustable guide roller boxes located on both sides of the machine, which direct the rail to the ground. Only two railroad employees are needed to untie the rails 28 Railway Track & Structures April 2008 www.rtands.com http://www.rtands.com
