Railway Track & Structures - April 2008 - (Page 29) from the rail train. Once the train is unloaded, the RUM moves to a road crossing and sets off for movement to the next work location,” said George Farris, vice president marketing at Herzog. Farris also notes the Herzog SelfPropelled Multi-Purpose Machine (MPM) continues to remain very popular for ditching, materials handling of ballast, ties, rail and OTM. According to Farris, the MPM is very safe and productive and comes equipped with quick disconnect attachments, which include ditching buckets, grapples and magnets for multiple operations. offers a wide range of equipment sales, rental and lease programs to help the railroads get the equipment needed to get their material handling requirements accomplished. Dennis Hanke, RCE’s railroad specialist, notes that railroads are asking suppliers for more reliable equipment with modern technology such as that found on today’s construction equipment. Vaia Car Vaia Car, which is represented in the United States and Canada by ESCO Equipment Service Company, offers the Vaia Car TSR-340. The company describes the TSR-340 as a 400-hp, 35-ton workhorse, with the ability to move heavy loads on rail effectively and efficiently. It is CE Certified, which requires additional safety features and operating characteristics to allow it to work in 21 European countries. According to the company, the 340 is safe and easy to operate due to its dual braking systems, trainline air, standard couplers, Mitchell Mitchell Equipment Corp. manufactures a hi-rail system for Caterpillar® rubber-tired excavators. The excavator can self-propel on either tires or rail. The hi-rail system is load-sensing, which allows it to maintain a constant pressure on the rail wheels as it travels through switch frogs and crossings. The machine can be equipped with a variety of attachments to perform various material handling jobs. Two examples of this include a friction drive, which turns the machine into a rail layer, and a train air brake system that allows the excavator to safely control railcar brakes. eight steel wheels on rail and climatecontrolled, high-visibility cab. The TSR-340 can be equipped with a track geometry measurement system that measures and records surface, alignment, cross level, gauge, cant, twist and rail internal profiles. Six cameras and six lasers are used on this system and each module of the integrated system uses optical, contactless technology based on the triangulation principle between collimated laser and high-resolution camera beams. Also available is a rail corrugation system that measures and records short-, medium- and long-wave longitudinal rail wear, and a catenary geometry and wear system that measures and records wire height, stagger and wire wear. According to the company, the Vaia Car TSR-340 is no longer just a dedicated power unit for movement of materials but now is a high-tech tool for track geometry, rail corrugation and overhead wire measurements that aid in the planning and operation of a safe railroad. Modern Track Machinery Modern Track Machinery, Inc., offers the PEM LEM, a motorized lifting and transportation switch-handling system that allows a pre-assembled switch to be handled efficiently. Each PEM LEM unit adjusts to ensure that the trackwork is lifted simultaneously, protecting the geometry of the trackwork. MTM points out that the PEM LEM minimizes any stress and unnecessary torque of the turnout during the installation, which ultimately reduces cost and maximizes the life cycle of the trackwork. Railquip The Railquip, inc., equipment line includes the Movable Work Platform, which allows technicians to work on roof-mounted equipment safely, and the Bogie/Truck Dropping Table, designed to allow the technicians to safely remove the bogie/truck by lowering it beneath the vehicle for removal.
