Railway Track & Structures - April 2008 - (Page 37) weeks to restore tracks to Class 2 speeds. SKOL was down 22 days, 20 of which were work days to get the line back in service. Work during that period included 38 miles of cribbing, lining, handwork; 1,900 ties installed; 605 cars of ballast unloaded; 142 cars of riprap placed; 16 bridges repaired; and 96.8 total miles of surfacing. Gratitude for accomplishment “This large scale recovery speaks volumes for Roadmaster Kenny White, General Manager Ray Pena and the grit of the entire Watco Team,” Ingram said. “Watco would like to thank the Union Pacific for helping ballasting operations and the NRC and contractors who were well-equipped, highly trained, and able to perform. The shortline railroad industry can’t afford to hold these assets in-house, so we are dependent upon quality contracting.” Participating contractors included: McGrath Construction Corp.; Kelly-Hill Company; H&H Trackworks Inc.; Herzog Contracting Corp.; SKOL employees and contractors assessed the damage and planned repairs. Lone Star Railroad Contractors, Inc.; Osmose Railroad Services, Inc.; Railroad Repair and Maintenance; Kanza Equipment; R.J. Corman; Hulcher; Young’s Environmental Cleanup, Inc.; Arapahoe Excavating, Inc.; and Lewellen Excavating. Railway Age magazine named the South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad 2008 Regional Railroad of the Year. The award will be presented at the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association’s annual meeting in San Antonio, Tex., on May 5. www.rtands.com Railway Track & Structures April 2008 37 http://www.rtands.com
