Railway Track & Structures - June 2008 - (Page 51) “We have also seen a continuing trend toward the use of ‘captive’ fastenings for new track installations,” Wilcox said. “The advantages of having tie pads, insulators and clips preassembled on ties at the tie plant and arriving at the worksite ready for installation are apparent to railroads, contractors and transit systems.” Wilcox continued: “We continue to supply SAFELOK III fasteners for up to 800,000 new concrete ties on the Union Pacific and we have recently received an order for PANDROL® SAFELOK III fasteners for an additional 200,000 concrete ties for the Kansas City Southern Meridian Speedway Project. “We are now producing SAFELOK I Long Reach clips for the freight railroads this year,” he noted. “The long reach feature provides a clip that extends 1/2 inch further on the rail base and provides a slightly higher toe load. This longer-reach fastener provides a safety feature to ensure clip retention on high-degree curves where shoulder wear and insulator wear are most prevalent. “We are also offering new insulator designs for our PANDROL® SAFELOK I system,” Wilcox said. “These designs include wide-heel insulators that can be used with our new stainless steel Shoulder Face Repair Shim used to repair worn shoulders in track. This repair procedure renews tie life and eliminates the need for tie replacement. “Norfolk Southern and New Jersey Transit are now placing orders for the PANDROL® VICTOR system,” he pointed out. “The PANDROL® VICTOR system for wood ties combines the durability of the AREMA tie plate with the benefits of PANDROL® resilient fasteners. The flat tie plate provides the maximum bearing area, while the PANDROL® fasteners provide holding power, prevention of rail rollover and reduced maintenance. Testing at TTCI, with 39-ton axle loads, has shown a five-fold decrease in gauge widening when using resilient fasteners on wood ties. “Orders are pending for the PANGUARD system for the PATCO High Speed Line for the Collingswood viaduct and other bridges on the system,” he said. “PANGUARD delivers a very-low dynamic stiffness and provides exceptional vibration reduction www.rtands.com Railway Track & Structures June 2008 51 http://www.rtands.com
