Railway Track & Structures - August 2008 - (Page 34) Technical report Harsco Track Technologies’ stoneblower at work on Network Rail track. The machine moves down the track, in the opposite direction to measurement and treats each selected pair of ties simultaneously. At the completion of maintenance the machine produces a record of pre and post-treatment track quality. “There are also avoided work blocks. By doing less work, you are not coming in and blocking the track. In these days of capacity issues on the railway, anytime you are not blocking trains is a savings to the railroad. Likewise, because crews are not coming out as often and working less there will not be as many slow orders. There is an additional benefit because the surface is generally better, which results in a fuel savings. There are a lot of data showing smoother track uses less fuel than a rough track, where energy is anticipated in the suspen- sion in the freight vehicles,” said Zarembski. Even with all the benefits, stoneblowing has a number of considerations. A big factor is cost. “Railroads need to look at their costs. Not only do maintenance costs, such as the cost of tamping, need to be considered, but also the operational costs. What if there is more track time available? What is that worth to a railroad? I’ve seen numbers that put the value of a track time window at $300 to $500/hr. plus. On a high-density track with high-value commodities, it could 34 Railway Track & Structures August 2008 www.rtands.com http://www.rtands.com
