AREMA NEWS President’s Column REMA is together with REMSA in 2008 at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The AREMA 2008 Annual Conference will be held September 21-24 and REMSA’s World Rail Expo 2008 will be held September 21-23. The conference program will provide an excellent opportunity for members of the railway industry to increase their knowledge. The Program Committee has assembled a slate of 65 technical presentations that you don’t want to miss. On Monday, September 21, the Opening General Session will feature greetings from the presidents of REMSA and RSSI, a Federal Railroad Administration report, presentation of the 2008 Dr. W. W. Hay Award for Excellence, announcement A 2008 AREMA Annual Conference of the Member-Get-A-Member Campaign winner and technical presentations from each of our six functional groups. Let’s not forget that this year the Communications & Signals Functional Group will be included in the Annual Conference presentations. The third annual Meet the Next Generation Event will be held Monday afternoon. This event provides engineering students the opportunity to mix with railroaders, as well as with consulting engineering firms and railway suppliers. Please come and welcome the future engineers. On Tuesday, our functional groups, Engineering Services, Maintenance, Passenger & Transit, Structures, Communications & Signals and Track, will hold concurrent sessions with presentations relating to the particular group. Be sure to review the conference program in advance and select the presentations you want to attend. Also, at noon on Tuesday, plan on attending the Annual Chairmen’s Luncheon, which acknowledges the dedication and leadership of our technical committee chairs. Wednesday’s Closing General Session will begin with the installation of the 2008-2009 AREMA officers. After the installation, functional group technical presentations will continue. The AREMA conference will feature three indemand seminars: - FRA 214 Roadway Worker On-Track Safety September 20, 2008 - Environmental Permitting Issues in Railroad Construction Projects September 21, 2008 - Introduction to Practical Railway Engineering September 24-26, 2008 You can register for the conference and the seminars online at www.arema.org. It’s been an honor to serve as AREMA’s president. I want to thank my wife and best friend, Teresa, for her continued support. I also want to thank our members and others in the railway industry for their support. The Board of Governors and the Board of Directors continue to actively progress our association and, for that, I thank them. Last, but not least, I give my sincere thanks to Dr. Charles Emely and the AREMA staff for their dedicated support to me and to AREMA. Thanks all.
