Railway Track & Structures - September 2007 - (Page 38) Transit m/w Workmen install the platforms and the tactile warning system at the Lebanon Station. • 152,000 linear feet of rail replaced with new prime 136pound cwr. The rail replaced ranged from 80-pound to 119pound jointed rail, much of which was not control-cooled rail. The rail was supplied via two rail trains of 50 1,600-foot strings by L.B. Foster out of Pueblo, Colo. The general track work contractor was Queen City Railroad Construction, Inc., of Knoxville, Tenn. • 22,203 ties were replaced during the track rehabilitation, approximately 30 percent of the ties in place. • 23,750 tons of ballast were used in surfacing the track. A large percentage of that was used in realigning the curves to accommodate 59-mph passenger trains in lieu of the existing 20-mph freight trains. • Six bridges were replaced and two additional new bridges were built on the yard bypass track. The bridges were built by Ray Bell Construction of Nashville. • Three public highway-rail crossings were closed during the project. • The 34 public grade crossings on the line are now all equipped with flashers and gates with constant warning time. • A CTC signal system was installed, with one controlled passing siding. The signal contractor was a joint venture between Stansell Electric, Inc., of Nashville and Interrail Signals, Inc., of Jacksonville, Fla. • A downtown station was built in Riverfront Park (MP 0). Additional funding was given by the City of Nashville to upgrade the downtown station into an attractive station in the heart of downtown. The station was built by W&O Construction of Cookeville, Tenn. • Four permanent outlying stations were built in Donelson (MP 7.3), Hermitage (MP 11.6), Mt. Juliet (MP 17.1) and Lebanon (MP 31.4). Each station consists of a 360foot-long concrete platform, shelters, ADA ramp, and 150 to 250 parking spaces. The outlying stations were built by Crockett & Phillips Construction, Inc., of Carthage, Tenn. • A temporary station was built in the Martha area (MP 22). This station was necessary due to a TDOT roadway project in the area that will cause the rail to be realigned almost 500 feet within the next two years. The temporary station has a 200-foot-long asphalt platform and a gravel parking lot with almost 200 spaces. 38 Railway Track & Structures September 2007 www.rtands.com http://www.transalert.com http://www.rtands.com
