Railway Track & Structures - September 2007 - (Page 8) I N D U S T R Y T O D AY Also in New York, officials broke ground July 20 on the Metro-North Railroad station at Yankee Stadium. The $91-million station is scheduled to open in June 2009, after the Yankees move into their new stadium across East 161st Street from their existing stadium. The station will serve riders on the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines. The station will have two 10-carlength island platforms. Four staircases and two elevators will connect the platforms to a 10,000-square-foot covered mezzanine, making the station fully ADA compliant. From the mezzanine, a 450-foot-long, 25-foot-wide overpass will lead to the stadium and the new parks being constructed on the waterfront. The overpass will be located north of 153rd Street. Although the new station is located on Metro-North's Hudson Line south of the Morris Heights Station, the intent is to provide service on game days from all three Metro-North services. There is a design-build contract with CCA Civil Inc./Halmar International LLC and a construction management contract with DMJM Harris Inc. Steel Dynamics Inc. and L.B. Foster Company teamed up to supply a first-of-its-kind shipment of welded rail in late June. What makes this shipment unique is the fact that, for the first time in the Western Hemisphere, 240-foot lengths of rail manufactured by SDI were used to weld the 1,600-foot strings for the Saint Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad. Currently, the industry provides 80-foot lengths of rail that are welded into 1,600-foot strings that require 20 to 22 welds per string. By using 240-foot rail lengths, the number of welds per 1,600-foot string is significantly reduced, statistically reducing the probability of in-track weld failures. Laurie Ruemler, general manager, Rail Products, L.B. Foster Company, said, “We have partnered with SDI by providing handling and drilling support, our own welded rail train to transport the welded strings and a crew to unload at the customer’s project site. And we are looking forward to SDI running 320-foot lengths in 2008.” The illustration shows 240-foot rail lengths at SDI as they are fed into the welder.
