Railway Track & Structures - September 2008 - (Page 14) AREMA NEWS Professional Development Upcoming Seminars FRA 214 Roadway Worker On-Track Safety Salt Lake City, UT September 20 (PDH/CEU: 4.0) This workshop has been developed for any potential roadway worker, or contractor to a railroad. This seminar is in conjunction with the AREMA 2008 Annual Conference. Environmental Permitting Salt Lake City, UT September 21 (PDH/CEU: 6.25) This seminar is designed for Engineering, Environmental, Construction, Industrial Development, and Planning Department staff from the railroads, as well as their contractors and consultants. This seminar is in conjunction with the AREMA 2008 Annual Conference. Introduction to Practical Railway Engineering Salt Lake City, UT September 24-26 (PDH/CEU: 16) Our experience has shown that typical participants benefiting the most from this course are those with limited exposure to the railway industry, or railroaders with highly specialized positions. For example, a structural engineer well versed in highway bridge design but with some exposure to railway bridge design, would gain valuable knowledge about track, signals, and railway operations typically unfamiliar to those outside the industry. This seminar is in conjunction with the AREMA 2008 Annual Conference. Basic Track Maintenance Seminar Atlanta, GA October 14-15, 2008 (PDH: 15) This seminar is designed for railroad professionals wanting to expand their applied knowledge of basic railroad track maintenance. Railroad employees, contractor and consultants will learn basic track inspection, proper track maintenance and safe work practices. This course is particularly beneficial for newly hired engineering graduates and railroad maintenance contractors. FYI… We hope to see you at the AREMA 2008 Annual Conference in conjunction with REMSA World Rail Expo 2008. Continued from page 13 Railroad Association has decided to purchase Handbooks for all of its more than 400 members. I think this is a strong indication of the quality and importance of this publication to the industry. The final thought that I will share in this article is to advise that the upcoming Annual Conference is scheduled for September 21-24 in Salt Lake City. We have a full slate of general session and technical presentations that I know you will enjoy. Monday afternoon, a three hour tour and train trip sponsored by the Utah Transit Authority is scheduled for anyone who is interested. The UTA Front Runner Commuter Rail System opened for service in April 2008. This is an opportunity to take a ride on a new 14 Railway Track & Structures system and talk to the UTA representatives about its service, the successes and challenges they had in delivering the project and current day thinking about the design and construction of its commuter line. Please join us in Salt Lake City and participate in what will be a great conference. Please remember that this year we will be co-locating with the REMSA World Rail Expo. In closing, I’d like to say that I look forward to the next year and working with AREMA members, staff and the Board to continue the progress the Association has seen in the past years. Feel free to contact me if you have any recommendations concerning how AREMA can better serve its members. Thank you. - Robert J.
