AREMA continues to meet its goals with respect to membership retention and growth. This is especially important as the exodus of knowledge and talent from the rail industry has begun as the so-called baby boomers retire. RT&S: What things did you accomplish during your term in ofﬁce? What are you most proud of having accomplished? Etherton: AREMA recently published the Bridge Inspection Handbook and it appears that it will be a best-seller and an important resource for anyone involved in the evaluation of railroad structures. The handbook was developed by AREMA Committee 10, Structures Maintenance & Construction, and is the ﬁrst publication available devoted exclusively to the inspection of railroad bridges and structures, including tunnels and culverts. During my term as AREMA’s president, I had the opportunity to attend the NRC 2008 Conference and the RTA Annual Conference and Technical Symposium. Both events afforded me the opportunity to address the conferences in detail about AREMA and what resources, manuals, seminars, etc., are available to their members from AREMA. The hospitality was great. Thanks NRC and RTA. RT&S: Where do you see the organization going from here? Five years from now? Ten years from now? Etherton: Staff executives from AREMA, RSSI, REMSA and RSI have been working diligently to plan a 2011 worldclass, multi-organizational event in Minneapolis. The event will include technical conferences organized by AREMA and the Coordinated Mechanical Association, as well as trade shows organized by REMSA, RSSI and RSI. what it continues to do for the organization year after year. AREMA’s Board of Governors continue to provide the overall policy and general strategic direction for the association, while the Board of Directors has the operational role involving the day-to-day operations of the functional groups and technical committees. I want to thank the members of both boards for their active participation. RT&S: Have you reached all the goals you set? Was there anything you wanted to do that you did not get around to or could not do? Etherton: The AREMA Educational Foundation continues to grow. In 2007, the Foundation awarded more than 19 scholarships totaling $34,200. In 2008, AREMA awarded 24 scholarships totaling $52,500. Companies and individuals continue to recognize the Foundation as a valuable resource in attracting new talent to the rail industry.
