The average height of these structures over the muskeg and tundra-like conditions is 12 feet, with some structures spanning creeks at a height of 30 feet. The upgrades focus on replacing a high percentage of caps, stringer chords and ties, with some posting of substandard piling, as well. When complete, CN will have the ability to safely increase train speeds and handle heavier loads. Besides the stress of railroad traffic, these bridges are also subjected to frost heaves in the spring. There is a sense of urgency to complete the change outs of caps, stringer cords and deck replacements. “CN has made commitments to customers to handle various mining equipment that is oversized and heavy, a perfect mix for a newly-upgraded railroad” explained Steve Del Vecechio, manager of bridge and structures for CN Western Region. “With an ambitious schedule in front of us, we are all actively trying to ensure the steady flow of supplies and support for all of our contractors involved with this multi-year project.” With the CN commitment to the oil sands project in full swing, everyone will benefit. Specifically, the railroad represents a major artery capable of delivering much needed supplies to the growing population of Fort McMurray and the huge demands the oil industry places on infrastructure to expand and deliver their much needed product. Open-deck pile trestles The majority of the work entails the rehabilitation of open-deck timber pile trestles. The largest one, near Fort Significant player “Clearly, CN wants to be a significant player serving northern Alberta and the oil sands. When the upgrades are complete, CN will be in position to be a major contributor to our customers, while significantly reducing the carbon footprint associated with the current transportation modes supplying this strategic area,” stated James McLeod, regional chief engineer of CN Western Region.
