Coulam points out the number of regional and shortline railroads such as the Alaska Railroad, Montana Rail Link and Central Oregon and Pacific continues to grow as Encore makes chemical tie repair more affordable. Coulam notes that Encore has experienced a record year in the sales of its handgun-applied dual-cartridge tie-plugging material to all types of customers from Class 1s to regionals, shortlines and transit agencies. Encore delivered the second generation of the RTP ride-on tie plugger to Union Pacific. Coulam notes that by collaborating with Union Pacific personnel in developing many new features the RTP is safer, more productive, and easier to maintain. Union Pacific ordered 23 RTP rideon tie pluggers for their rail and curve gangs this year and Chicago Transit Authority took delivery of a variation of Encore’s TPI-TG machine that was modified to accommodate the requirements of working in an environment with electrified rail. “At the request of our customers, we have expanded our services to include track maintenance consulting, track in- spection, track construction management and a wide variety of track-related training and certification programs,” said Coulam. “Like all aspects of track maintenance, tie repair technology is changing to accommodate shorter track windows and heavier loads. Our customers are a valuable resource for expressing their needs, then working together to provide solutions. Encore has the unique ability to address the problems and desires of our customers by manufacturing the wood and concrete tie repair material and application equipment,” said Coulam. Osmose Railroad Services, Inc., manufactures TIE-GARD™ preservative gel. David Ostby, products manager at Osmose, points out that using TIE-GARD will stop existing decay and prevent new decay for at least five years. Ostby also points to TIE-GARD’S low cost per application by treating ties during rail relay when the vulnerable tie plate is exposed, as a product advantage. “Over the past 20 years, every major study of tie-failure analysis has pointed to decay in the tie plate area as the single biggest contributor to premature failure. Making a commitment to treating ties Encore’s handgun applicator being put to use. during rail relay will help position railroads to maximize their considerable investment in track-related components,” said Ostby. Railroad Solutions has developed a precoating (penetrating sealer) for concrete ties to prevent seat abrasion. The company also manufactures a small unit www.rtands.com Railway Track & Structures October 2007 35 http://www.rtands.com
