Railway Track & Structures - October 2007 - (Page 45) out and correct unfastening lengths required are not known because the reduced RNT requiring adjustment is not known. The Salient RSM-StressNet™ and SmartJoint™ Systems have been developed to provide these key missing pieces, thereby promoting a “smart-systems” approach to a more-effective management of rail break/defect removal repairs in terms of RNT readjustment. Specifically, the RSMStressNet™-SmartJoint™ System: • Determines the RNT being readjusted. • Monitors the plug RNT after a temporary repair. • Lists when to return for the final repair/RNT readjustment. • Provides info on how to readjust to the desired RNT. • Provides info on effectiveness of the RNT readjustment. defect repairs per Class 1 railroad per year in North America. It is a well known fact that when the rail is broken or cut for defect removal, the RNT drops to the temperature value of the break/cut (e.g., when the rail breaks in tension at 20 degrees F, its RNT=20 degrees F at that location). The accompanying gaps require closure by adding rail, usually through a rail-plug insertion, thereby locking in the reduced RNT. It is this reduced RNT that is required to be readjusted before the onset of warm temperatures to avoid a bucklingprone condition. The usual readjustment is made by cutting rail out and unfastening a prescribed length of rail. The basic difficulty with this procedure is that the correct amount of rail to cut Summary The RailStress Module/StressNet™/SmartJoint™System offers a cost-effective and simple way to continuously manage cwr thermal forces and neutral temperature for enhanced cwr safety and performance. It is a proven technology with both U.S. and international field experience. It offers a “smart-system” approach to mitigating potentially-damaging thermal forces by providing real-time data on cwr neutral temperature behavior. Its applications include cwr installation temperature monitoring, curve movement RNT monitoring, rail-break and track-buckling detection, providing buckling-hazard alerts, and rail break/defect repair condition monitoring. www.rtands.com Railway Track & Structures October 2007 45 http://www.rtands.com
