Railway Track & Structures - October 2007 - (Page 51) PRODUCTS AND LITERATURE Arc welding process The Lincoln Electric Company has introduced Surface Tension Transfer®, an arc welding process used on its patented inverter-based power source to significantly reduce spatter and smoke whether the arc shielding gas used is 100percent carbon dioxide, blends or argon and carbon dioxide or helium mixtures for stainless steel. STT accomplishes this through the use of high-frequency inverter technology with advanced waveform control. Its design has the same basic power platform as other inverter power sources, but uses electronics to more closely monitor and control the current. The STT process controls the electrode current during the entire gas metal arc welding process and can be used with 100-percent carbon dioxide in combination with electrodes ranging from .030 in. to .045 in. diameter. The Tracksure patented nut locking device for bolted joints is comprised of three components: a modified bolt with a reverse thread, a locking nut and a serrated locking cap. The modified bolt is fitted to the track and the nut is added and torqued in the standard manner. The locking nut is then tightened on the reverse thread, against the first nut, using a conventional wrench. The chrome serrated locking cap is then pushed fully down over both components and a spring clip clicks it into place. The locking cap will automatically tighten against the original nut should it start to loosen even microscopically, locking it firmly in place to maintain a secure fixing. Phone: 800-447-7245. Vacuum loader options Extendable and telescopic booms are now offered by Guzzler Manufacturing on select models of Guzzler CL®, Guzzler ACE® and Guzzler NX® trucks. The CL features an optional telescopic or extendable boom. The telescopic boom extends from 14.5 to 19.5 ft, and the extendable boom extends from 15.5 to 20.5 ft. The Guzzler ACE features an optional telescopic boom that extends from 13 to 18 ft. The NX has an optional extendable boom that extends from 10 to 15 ft. Phone: 800-627-3171. Equipment transport vehicle Club Car offers the Carryall 252 IQ Plus electric vehicle. The vehicle provides 500 amps of power for up to 21 peak hp performance, enough strength to carry a full load of heavy equipment and sufficient torque to maneuver rough terrain and climb hills. The system’s high-output charger and eight 6-volt battery configuration gives a range of up 86 miles on a single charge. Top speed can be customized between five and 17 mph. Acceleration and motor braking can also be customized. Phone: 800-CLUBCAR. PEOPLE RailAmerica, Inc., appointed Darryl Gabriel regional chief engineer for the Central Region, with headquarters in Dallas. Suppliers BASF Agricultural Products appointed Paul Rea director of the Specialty Products Division. Dragun Corporation named Mary Carnagie field geologist and Amy Owen, environmental engineer. HNTB Corporation named Peter Gertler national public transit market leader, based in Oakland, Calif. Interfleet Technology North America appointed Larry D. Kelterborn president. Nigel Davies named vice president, business development. Gordon Campbell becomes vice president, operations. Kleerdex Company, LLC, named William K. Crane, Jr., manufacturer’s representative for plastics distribution in the southeast U.S. Safetran Systems Corporation appointed Clark D. Stelling general manager railroad sales, succeeding John E. Midili, who retires Nov. 2, after 38 years in the railroad supply industry. Chas. A. Sells, Inc., named John M. Hale Survey Department manager, Hamilton, N.J. John Araneo, P.E., becomes director of transportation infrastructure and facilities, also based in Hamilton. STV Incorporated named Richard M. Amodei senior vice president and chief strategic growth officer. Switch indicator D.A.S. Rail Enterprises LLC has developed the Switchrite Switch Indicator to help positively determine route. The device mounts between switch points below rail height drawing attention to area of switch to be visually checked during operations. Features include high visibility both day and night (1/4 mile minimum), 11-gauge steel construction, powder-coated finish for durability. Reflector panels can be made and fitted with any color reflector. The colored reflector panel on the indicator moves with switch points (bridal bar) giving positive indication even on run through switch. The indicator has only one moving part and all parts are easily accessible. Phone: 618-254-5614. Track care products ERICO®, Inc., has introduced three track care products to help improve the performance of railroad track and lower track maintenance costs. The RailTec system for bolt holes features a cold expansion process and increases the life of a bolt hole by producing a zone of residual compressive stresses around the hole. This zone protects the hole from the stresses applied to the rail end to significantly decrease the probability of fatigue cracks and broken rails. The RTL rail condition monitoring system monitors changes to RNT, rail core temperature and stresses within the rail at the neutral axis and is used for predicting rail kinks and reductions in RNT caused by ground subsidence. The patented sensors can also be set up to read vertical and horizontal stresses within the rail. The sensors’ data are fed back to lineside data-logging and communications equipment so that real-time analysis can be provided at Obituary John Pit, vice president of sales, VAE Nortrak, died Aug. 25.
