Three Class 1 roads now employ this process as a way to significantly improve tie life in high-decay/wet climate locations. More than 1.2 million ties have been installed in the past three years by these roads and other smaller roads and the trend is for this to continue to grow,” said RTA’s Gauntt. “It’s working,” Caric of Tangent Rail said about the use of borates. “There was a 17-year study done, probably three or four years ago; those ties have been in the ground close to 20 years and they are showing no signs of degradation.
