After the algorithm identifies a joint bar, it searches the image for anomalies in the pixilation that would be characteristic of a crack. If such a pattern in the image is recognized, the image is flagged by the system as a potential defect. Suspected defective bars are passed to a user interface console for operator review. A suspected defect is reported with a red box in the image outlining the location of the potential crack. The operator can subsequently confirm or reject a suspected crack. The system outputs several reports, including an exception report with images of the defective bar superimposed on the report and inventory report with number of joints per mile. In addition, GPS locations can be exported for all bars collected on a given run. The primary return on investment for railroads is a reduction in labor hours and track time required for walking or hi-rail joint bar inspections. The systems installed in track geometry cars will cover 100-200 miles of track per day. The ENSCO hi-rail service trucks are primarily being utilized on jointed track and on average cover 40-50 miles of track per day. Ultimately, the goal is to reduce derailments caused by failed joint bars. As with any new technology, ongoing production use of the system will indicate where or how technology improvements can be applied. In the upcoming year, ENSCO will continue to refine crack detection algorithms as well as add new features such as rail gap measurement and missing bolt detection. In parallel, railroads will continue to develop the practical assimilation of this new inspection information into existing railroad m/w business process. Figure 1.
