Railway Track & Structures 12/07 - (Page 23) taken under 18,000-pound lateral and 33,000-pound vertical load (0.55 L/V) at about 12 mph. After 412 mgt of heavy-axle-load traffic, the track gauge exceeded 57.25 inches in more than 50 percent in Control Zone 1 and in the NorFast test zone. The gauge was approaching 57.5 inches in spots, and regauging would have been required by 450 mgt. This gauge widening was likely a result of the high number of broken screw spikes in Control Zone 1, and screw spike uplift and plate cutting in the NorFast test zone. Less than 10 percent of the Pandrol Victor test zone widened to more than 57.25 inches compared to almost 20 percent of Control Zone 2. However, the maximum loaded gauge in the Pandrol Victor zone (about 57.5 inches) was wider than that of Control Zone 2. This may have been due to the higher number of tie plates with more than two broken screw spikes in the Victor Zone (11 percent) as compared to Control Zone 2 (one percent). The results illustrate the importance of fastener components working together as a system. The best spring clip is of little use if the plate breaks. Likewise, good Figure 1, left and right, shows the low rail surface condition. plates will not hold a rail if the spikes that fasten them to the tie are broken. New tests are now being designed to evaluate state-of-the-art fastening systems for wood ties. In addition, a test of rail insulators for concrete ties is being planned. Rail profile grinding Railroads use rail profile grinding to maintain or restore proper shape to the rail and to remove damaged rail.
