AREMA C&S update With more sophisticated software, railroads and transit systems are learning to plan MOW more efficiently, which leads to better risk management. hat’s happening with AREMA C&S? To find out, we touched base with Richard Bowden, assistant director signals for BNSF and current AREMA C&S Functional Group Vice President. “The 2007 AREMA C&S Technical Conference held in Calgary, Alberta, had more than 400 people registered,” Bowden noted. “A special thanks goes to Bob Nash and Peter Arato of CPR and Dwight Tays and Ron Nicol of CN for their support. The morning session included the popular C&S Leader Panel questions, along with a variety of presentations. The afternoon session was split into two tracks, one for the more traditional C&S subjects, and one for Information Technology and Positive Train Control. This format was very successful and we intend W to repeat both the dual afternoon session and the C&S Leader Panel questions at the 2008 conference. “RSSI has announced that their 48th Annual C&S Exhibition will be held in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, May 21-22, 2008,” he said. “In addition, the MidStates Rail-Highway Grade Crossing Safety Conference will be held May 19 and 20 at the same location. The RSSI C&S Exhibition is a great way to get to know C&S vendor personnel and get some hands-on time with a variety of new and existing products, while interacting with other railroad personnel. “As mentioned, the 2007 AREMA C&S Technical Conference was held in Calgary,” Bowden said. “The 2008 Conference will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, a beautiful area with some spectacular mountain scenery. The C&S conference will be combined this year with the Engineering Services, Maintenance, Passenger & Transit, Structures and Track conference. Since it is a combined conference, it will include subject tracks organized around the AREMA Functional Groups and interests. C&S will be another track, along with the five others during the concurrent sessions.” Monday of the conference will have a half day of papers covering various topics, including one C&S paper. On Tuesday there will be a separate day-long sub-track with the C&S Functional Group session for topics related to C&S, Information Technology and Positive Train Control.
