Railway Track & Structures 12/07 - (Page 7) Norfolk Southern, the States of Virginia, Ohio and West Virginia, and the federal government formed a public-private partnership to fund the project, which also includes new intermodal terminals in Columbus, Ohio, Prichard, W.Va., and the Roanoke, Va., region. The federal government has authorized $95 million toward the $151 million cost (estimated in 2005 dollars) of the tunnel clearances, and Virginia has authorized $22.35 million for terminal construction and clearances for the four tunnels within the state. Earlier this year, West Virginia enacted new legislation to provide funding for rail intermodal projects, which will first be applied to the development of the terminal in Prichard. Ohio is contributing $836,355 for up to 95 percent of the costs of raising overhead obstruction clearances within the state. CTA lifts restrictions on 25,000 feet of track The Chicago Transit Authority continues to make progress in completing rail tie replacement work to eliminate slow zones in the Red Line’s State Street subway, along the Clark Junction corridor and on the O’Hare branch of the Blue Line. As a result of the work completed in mid-November, slow zone restrictions were lifted on 25,000 feet, or nearly five miles, of track. Train speed increased in the Red Line subway from Grand to Clark/Division, on the Blue Line between Montrose and Jefferson Park, along one mile of track from Jefferson Park to Harlem and along the Clark Junction corridor from Diversey to Southport. Also, the Brown Line Montrose and Addison stations reopened November 26 and December 3, respectively. The newly-renovated stations are accessible to customers with disabilities and include features such as new elevators (two per station), longer platforms to accommodate eight-car trains, brighter lighting, new auxiliary exits, refurbished canopies and new benches, Braille signs and bike racks. The Damen and Irving Park Stations closed November 26 and December 3, respectively.
