Railway Track & Structures - December 2008 - (Page 12) AREMA NEWS President’s Column his month, I’d like to give you an overview of the AREMA Educational Foundation and the great work it is doing to provide scholarships to college students who are interested in pursuing rail courses in college and careers in the rail industry. As I have stated earlier, we have a large number of industry employees who will retire over the course of the next 5-10 years. We need to recruit and hire talented and interested employees from numerous sources, including educational institutions to backfill the void left by these retirements. The scholarships that are being awarded by the Foundation will help to generate a pool of prospective new hires that will have a technical rail background when coming into the industry and are interested in a career in the rail industry. First, a little background from the new AREMA Educational Foundation Website, which can T AREMA Educational Foundation be found at www.AREMAFoundation.org. The AREMA Educational Foundation is a tax-exempt, charitable organization established by AREMA to promote educational activities related to railway engineering. The Foundation provides scholarships to engineering students who are specializing in the railway industry and supports other educational and training endeavors that help to ensure the future of the profession. Earlier this year, 24 scholarships were awarded for the 2008-2009 school year. These scholarships ranged from $1,000-$10,000. The award winners were announced at the Annual Conference in Salt Lake City in September and are posted on the Foundation Website and the AREMA Website under the Educational Foundation tab. Next year, I hope even more scholarships will be awarded, as the size of the program continues to increase as more and more contributions are made to the Foundation by corporations, AREMA members and others. Contributions to the Foundation are tax deductible as charitable contributions from U.S. taxpayers to the extent allowed by law. The Foundation is also able to accept corporate contributions, gifts and bequests. If you are interested in contributing to the Foundation, the contribution form is available online. In many cases, your contributions will also be matched by your company or company’s foundation. AREMA Member Chris Harding and CSXT, NS and UP have all established generous endowments with AREMA that will allow the Foundation to fund scholarships in perpetuity with these contributions and HNTB has committed to continuing to fund an HNTB Founder’s Scholarship. A list of all the scholarships that will be awarded next year is available online. We encourage any student who is interested in pursuing a career in railroading to apply for a scholarship through the Foundation. Committee 24 - Education and Training, makes scholarship award decisions each year. A group of Committee 24 members (the Scholarship Review Committee) volunteer to judge each of the applications consistent with the parameters that have been set by the donor (if applicable) and AREMA. Selections are made after thorough consideration and review. General criteria for all scholarship applicants include having an interest in railway engineering, maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.0 and being available for interview by the AREMA Scholarship Committee. Application materials must be received by March 13, 2009, and successful applicants will be notified no later than the end of April 2009. The AREMA Educational Foundation provides a valuable service to the industry by supporting students who are interested in a rail career. Please consider adding your support by contributing to the Foundation. Thank you. - Robert J. Boileau Robert J.
