Figure 1 is an example of the difference caused by metallurgy, where two rail types with an electric flash weld between them are shown. Note that the rail on the right has more RCF than the rail on the left. There are also nonmetallurgical factors that affect the occurrence of RCF. There were several locations in the test curve where track gauge exceeded 57 inches (the FRA limit for Class 4 track is 57.5 inches). Heavy RCF was more prevalent at 270 mgt, where the gauge was above 57 inches. There was heavy RCF at a few locations where rail gauge was less than 57 inches, but it was more common where the gauge was wider. But 57 inches is not a standard number that can be applied to all tracks as a gauge measurement that will promote RCF. Wheel and rail profiles at FAST are atypical compared to those in revenue service. However, there is anecdotal information from railroads that wide gauge contributes to low rail RCF development on their lines. Rail tests are being conducted at both the eastern and western revenue service test sites. Ten types of rails are being tested on seven different curves. The curves at the eastern site range from 6.8 to 10 degrees, and the curves at the western site are either one or two degrees. All rail types have shown excellent wear resistance under HAL traffic with projected wear life of at least 1,000 mgt, even in the sharpest curve. RCF developed on the low rail of the western site rail after about 300 mgt. It required corrective grinding after 370 mgt. Figure 2 shows the six-degree tie and fastener test curve at FAST. Ties and fasteners Ties and fastening systems that can provide high levels of gauge strength and track stability are increasingly necessary for safe operations, as axle loads and tonnage accumulation rates increase. A new test that currently includes 18 configurations of ties and fasteners began this year at FAST.
