Railway Track & Structures - December 2008 - (Page 25) Big job items give support to this tooling in order to keep performance at its peak.” The company’s product line includes rail drills, which it says are compact, lightweight and allow one-man operation to save time. The rail drills also have a quick coupler connection of the coolant system allowing the operator to cut quicker, smoother holes safely in the rail while extending drill bit life. “Cembre’s Impact Wrench and Tie Drills are designed with ergonomic handles for vertical and horizontal use with and without a support trolley,” said Sanfratello. “The CS-SD trolley moves smoothly along the rail with the SD-9P tie drill in vertical position and the NR11P Impact Wrench in either direction. This advancement allows operators to complete more work in a shorter amount of time and takes much of the ‘back work’ out of the heavy lifting and drilling.” The NR-11P impact wrench provides 1,327 ft. lb of torque and offers retaining circlips to fasten sockets to the drill for assurance and safety. The SD-9P tie drill provides a safety guard that provides effective protection and spring-loaded retraction of the drill upon completion, which minimizes operator effort and strain. Drew also notes the company’s success with its fast clip and E clip Pandrol clip machines this year due to understanding the customer needs and applications. ERICO® has more than a century of experience serving the railroad industry and recently expanded its solutions for the Signal and Communications sector by providing a new line of Track Care Products. The company notes its commitment to being a total solutions provider to the rail industry and offers a streamlined “one-stop source” approach for signal and track tool needs. Recent product developments include an updated and revised Rail Drill available in gas-, electric- and battery-powered versions. Modifications to the gas-powered rail drill include an altered exhaust port position for enhanced operator safety and comfort. The feed lever has also been changed for improved ergonomics. In addition, ERICO offers three Grinders: a 2.4-hp two-cycle, a 1.1-hp four-cycle and a 18-volt cordless model. A gas impact wrench is now available. ERICO points to its dedication to continuous product development and technological advances that provide new offerings for the rail industry. Hougen Manufacturing, Inc., TrakStar® Railroad Equipment has found that the increased use of the railroads as a mode of transport has subsequently created a demand for existing tools and also a demand for new types of tools to meet increased maintenance workloads. Lighter, faster tools are always in demand, but as the company notes, this type of tool is not always feasible when safety is factored into the equation. “While the ‘annular cutter’ technology is not new to the metal working industry, it is still considered new technology to some within the railroad industry. Hougen Mfg. is consistently working with track crews and engineers to educate and demonstrate the safety, reliability and cost savings that can be realized with the proper use and application of annu- Small tools Lightweight, easy to use tools New technology, old industry www.rtands.com Railway Track & Structures December 2008 25 http://www.rtands.com
