Reading Someone Else’s Copy of many, many attempts. However, with a little direction from Fowler, I started to get the hang of it. Throughout, other attendees were also achieving various levels of success with their small graphics (present company eventually included), as Fowler did laps around the min-van, taking time to help each participant with any issues. Even certain attendees with higher skill levels were taking on an educator’s role and aiding others with their techniques and issues. The father-son FASTSIGNS franchise owners—Tony and Robert Creamer—worked together on a graphic, until son Robert issued a critique of his father’s work: “Dang, dad, that looks like crap!” Fowler was a tad gentler, offering more subtle suggestions and pointers throughout the workshop. His first installation tip involved the proper way to clean the vehicle. “Spray isopropyl alcohol onto rag and wipe down the surface, rather than spraying the alcohol directly onto the vehicle, so it doesn’t leak down into the crevasses of the car, like the door frames, etc.,” he suggested After finally applying my SGIA logo decal (printed on MACtac media), I was satisfied with my first endeavor into vehicle graphics. The logo was level, with no (visible) bubbles, and I could picture this mini-van rolling down the street, successfully advertising the SGIA. And then, just as my confidence swelled, Fowler brought out the onepiece, full-body vinyl graphic, meant to cover one whole side of the minivan. Confidence gone. As Fowler guided the group through installation of the full-wrap (using multiple hands for holding it in place, a hair dryer to warm the vinyl, and some skilled squeegee work), he constantly pointed out areas that could cause problems, as well as movements and techniques that could back you into a corner when installing a large graphic. In each instance, he would point out what was just done wrong, then say, “And now you’re in a situation,” his catch phrase for a mistake having led to a problem with the installation.
