Sign Builder Illustrated Vehicle Graphics 101 - November 2007 - (Page 8) Orientation By Jeff Wooten, Editor Chris Ytuarte, Managing Editor Sign Builder Illustrated Welcome to Vehicle Graphics 101 W elcome to this special supplement that looks behind the “how-to” of vehicle wraps. We’re presenting stories on how vehicle specialists can wrap vehicles, learn to wrap vehicles, remove vinyl from vehicles, and market their vehicle graphics. This publication is intended to be a step-by-step reference guide for sign shops and graphics professionals who are looking for equipment, materials, and information that can help jump-start or improve their wrap business; we hope you find it helpful. Vehicle wrapping is a scorching-hot topic these days. Need proof? The Outdoor Advertising Association of America reported that outdoor adver- (United Application Standards Group), of which he is a founder. “If you go to a service station, the mechanic is Automotive Services Engineer certified,” he says. “Electricians and plumbers—certified; and so on. So we wanted to see what we could do to put together some kind of certification program for graphic installers.” Today, it’s estimated that motorists and pedestrians see a single vehicle’s advertising message as many as 70,000 times a day. There are a number of materials that can be utilized to wrap vehicles, so it’s important to understand how these prod- S8 SBI Vehicle Graphics 101 November 2007 PHOTO BY PHILIP DESIERE. tising generated $6.8 billion in revenue last year, and that transit advertising accounted for 12 percent of this figure. Some sources even state that vehicle wrapping is increasing 15 percent in revenue each year. And the American Trucking Association found that 90 percent of people who see vehicles with advertising on them looked at the words and pictures. How did this phenomenon start? Some trace it back to 1993, when 3M provided a Seattle printing company with vinyl material to wrap six city buses with Pepsi logos (in lieu of the standard paint jobs of the times). Peter Cree, 3M business manager and member of the board of directors, cites another key step in the growth of vehicle graphics—the creation of the UASG ucts can work for you. And that’s where we hope this publication is beneficial—so you can see what types of vinyls sign companies are using to wrap, what types of pitfalls to avoid during the wrapping process, and what tools are popular for removing vinyl. Wait a second . . . I think I hear the bell ringing to begin our first vehicle graphics class. Just turn the page; our first article details the tips and tricks we learned from attending a recent SGIA vehicle graphics workshop. We hope you’ll find the following education valuable and this resource beneficial. Now take a seat, get your desk ready, and pull out your vinyl and heat guns, because here it comes: Roll call! b
