Sign Builder Illustrated - May 2008 - (Page 10) Contributors Butch “Superfrog” Anton Butch’s harrowing survival story about his near-fatal carbon monoxide poisoning encounter a couple of issues back (“Superfrog’s Pond,” March 2008) touched a lot of our readers. “I’ve received a lot of well wishes from readers after the article appeared, and then there’s the people who are coming up to me at shows and asking if I remember them,” he laughs. Although Butch is still on the road to recovery, he does return this month with another interesting edition of his “Superfrog’s Pond” column: He looks at how, even with all this “new school” technology available, there are times when there’s “no school” like the “old school.” To learn why one should never truly forget about their sign-making roots, check out this month’s “Superfrog’s Pond,” beginning on page 30. Crawford Richard Crawford has quite a background. He once served as past president of the United States Sign Council (USSC). He’s also currently an attorney, where he offers sign consulting and zoning services, as well as the actual design and installation of on-premise signs. On top of all this, he also serves on several national building code committees for the International Code Council (ICC), so you know Richard has a solid grasp of the industry. This month, Richard pens a piece about how the International Dark-Sky Association is advancing its sign lighting agenda beyond a reasonable measure. To help you fight these ill-sighted actions, Richard suggests it’s best to be educated in the proper counter-arguments to employ, which you can read for yourself in this month’s “Electrifying Issues” on page 34. Dolan Codes for electric signs can be quite a challenging—and daunting—conundrum. “If you try to shed some light on the issue of codes for electric signs, some things stand out with clarity, while others turn, well, a little murky,” Thomas writes. To get a better handle on the situation, Thomas sat down and spoke with representatives from Underwriters Laboratories, as well as a transformer and power supply manufacturer, to help demystify some of this “code-speak.” To learn more about this subject, turn to Thomas’s piece beginning on page 58. To walk readers through this type of project (using the latest in digital software), Mark brings an antique photo of his great grandparents up-to-date twenty-first century style. This same technique can be used by your shop in point-of-purchase graphics production, so if you’re interested in reading more, check out this month’s “Digital Design” on page 40. 10 Sign Builder Illustrated May 2008
