Sign Builder Illustrated - October 2008 - (Page 10) Contributors Butch Anton SGIA ‘08 takes place later this month, and if you happen to be attending this year’s show in Atlanta, you might catch a glimpse of Butch roaming the aisles of helping out at an exhibitor’s booth. Butch has been a proponent of the graphic arts for quite some time now, having gotten his start by picking up a paintbrush. “[One day] I realized that I could only make so much money with just my two hands and a paintbrush,” he writes this month. “I needed to branch out.” Butch discovered the world of plastic molded letters and soon found himself selling more of these types of letter than he had ever expected. In his “Superfrog’s Pond” column on page 44, Butch takes a look at the different installation methods that are available for these types of letters. But one thing he’s noticed lately has been an increase in the demand for UV inkjet technology. “In the sign industry, UV inkjet printers are the up-and-coming technology, but UV inks are nothing new,” he writes this month. “A wide spectrum of the graphic arts field—including screen printing, digital printing, offset lithography, and flexographic printing—has used this technology for years. What’s remarkable is that usage of UV inks is growing remarkably fast.” To help you better navigate through this imaging field, Jim uses his “Hingst’s Sign Post” column on page 34 to present the first of a two-part series looking at the chemistry behind UV inks and the benefits (and drawbacks) or UV inkjet systems. Do you stare blankly ahead and try to ignore them? Do you scream at the top of your lungs and run out of the shop in a demented Woody Woodpecker manner? Or do you calmly try to figure out a solution to offer this customer? The concept of “illuminated black” may seem like an impossibility. “Like illuminated blue, black is not only hard on human vision, but it pretty much constrains any light passing through it— period!” Peter writes this month. “However there are a few tricks you can employ to make this impossible situation more of a realistic solution.” To learn some of these illuminating pointers, be sure to read Peter’s “Electrifying Issues” column that starts on page 40. He’ll also show some further tricks he employed to make this already-quality sign stand out even more. These details can be found in this month’s “New Dimensions” that begins on page 29.
