Sign Builder Illustrated - October 2008 - (Page 12) FeedBACK Revving Up for WrapQuest ctober is my favorite month of the year. The air feels more invigorating, football season is in full swing, and Halloween is on the horizon (which means airings of the all-time fave It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown). Because of October’s connection to Halloween, it should be no surprise that we’re in the mood to October is celebrate monsters this month—or the month more particularly, the creation and installation of Miles the Monster at for wrapping. Delaware’s Dover International Speedway (“Making a Monster,” page 52). One of last October’s highlights for me had to have been the Professional Graphic & Wrap Installers (PDAA) WrapQuest event held in Pompano Beach, Florida. I was invited to attend and found myself enjoying the company of graphics professionals learning more about the wrapping process and the vinyl specialists leading many of the application demonstrations. In case you haven’t heard, the good news is that the PDAA announced that SGIA has invited them to hold the second edition of its Wrap Quest event at the association’s SGIA ’08 Expo (October 15-18). The event will be located adjacent to SGIA ’08 in the lobby of the Georgia World Congress Center. According to a press release, WrapQuest ’08 will include vehicle wrap demonstrations by the “best of the best” PDAA Master Certified Installers. After each demonstration, WrapQuest participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and tryout vehicle wrapping films on different vehicles. To complete the educational track, participants will also be entitled to attend two special seminars created especially for this year’s WrapQuest—“Designing Vehicle Wraps That Work!” by Rob Ivers and “New Trends in Vinyl Graphic Applications” moderated by Kim Magraw and featuring a panel of four industry experts. B Y J E F F W O OT E N O I try not to shill in this column, and I’m definitely not a pitchman. (In fact, I’m certain you’d rather hear from the AFLAC duck or, gulp, Billy Mays!) So I decided to get in touch with WrapQuest Co-Founder and Wrap Specialist Rob Ivers (www.robivers.com) and have him fill you in on some of this year’s details. “WrapQuest ’08 is special in several ways,” says Ivers. “Attendees will get to see demonstrations by ten to twenty of the top vehicle wrap installers in the country. The majority of these installers have only shown their techniques to employees and never at a tradeshow.” Ivers was very excited SGIA asked PDAA to bring WrapQuest to its highest profile event. “It’s an incredible opportunity to liaison with major industry players to deliver a complete educational experience for people wanting to learn more about vehicle wraps,” he says. “We view this as a way to give something back to an industry that’s been very good to us.” Ivers thinks the wrap industry needs even more education. “Personally I believe many people don’t appreciate the difficulty level and the complexity of selling, designing, producing, and installing a professional-quality vehicle wrap, nor do they understand the value of those skills or how valuable it can be to the purchaser,” he elaborates. “A quality vehicle wrap will not only last for several years, it can bring a huge return on investment to the advertiser. Networks don’t give away television advertising, so why should we give away wraps? “There are new people entering the business every day. Their inexperience, low pricing, and poor quality are a major concern to many experienced veterans, not just myself. The good news is there are many learning and training opportunities today, compared to none when I was starting out.” WrapQuest ’08 hopes to be one part of the solution to this puzzle. b For registration information, please visit www.pdaa.com.. 12 Sign Builder Illustrated October 2008
