(www.brittenmedia.com) raised nearly $10,000 for the Kyle Petty Charity Ride, which began in Traverse City on July 13 and ended in Savannah, Georgia, on July 19. All donations gathered along the way support the Victory Junction Gang Camp for chronically ill children (founded by NASCAR driver Kyle Petty and his wife, Pattie). In addition to donations, Britten also provided a complete environmental graphics package for the launch. Some of the signage included an EventTruss starting arch (constructed from lightweight, polished aluminum that snaps together quickly). Britten also provided Roto-Top™ flags and poles, which allow flags to rotate with the breeze. The flags are made of durable BritLon™ polyester and screen-printed with fabric-penetrating dye. Other signage pieces included light pole banners, a stage backdrop, sponsor banners, and much more. All of the signage was printed and fabricated at Britten’s facility in Traverse City. PHOTO COURTESY OF DAKTRONICS. Daktronics Installs “Devilish” New Display Brookings, South Dakota—Daktronics Inc. (www.daktronics.com) is giving Blue Devils fans something to cheer about with the installation of a new center-hung scoring and video display at Duke University’s Cameron Indoor Stadium. The new, four-sided display replaces the basketball arena’s old scoreboard and took about four months to complete. It features four six-by-ten-foot LED video displays providing replays and statistics, eight full-color LED displays for advertisements, and four custom scoreboards. The entire structure measures more than fourteen feet wide, fourteen feet deep, and fifteen feet tall. “Given the ability to incorporate video elements for the first time in Cameron’s storied history, we are excited about enhancing what is already the best atmosphere in college basketball,” said Duke Director of Athletics Kevin White in a press release. In addition to new technology, a brass and wood trim gives the display a distinct Duke touch. “We met with University officials on multiple occasions to discuss the many options available to them,” said Daktronics Large Sports Venue Sales Manager Eric Lingren. “It became evident that we should incorporate some of the architectural and design elements of the well-known Cameron Indoor Stadium into the main center-hung scoreboard.” Engineering was responsible for designing the structure that incorporates all sixteen displays (as well as a new hoist system that could handle the heavier scoreboard). Manufacturing then assembled and tested the display and sent it in large sections to the stadium for onsite installation and a final test. Before installation began, the old scoreboard and hoist system were taken down, more wiring was put in for additional power, and Duke crews reinforced the roof. “Like all projects, the custom system for Duke had some challenges,” said Daktronics Project Manager Tom Minier. “We had to work around a busy event schedule in the facility this summer. Also incorporating the decorative brass railing and oak trim pieces meant even more attention to the little details, which will make this system truly unique. All in all, thanks to the efforts of the Daktronics team and the personnel at Duke, the project went very smoothly.” — Ashley Bray 14 Sign Builder Illustrated October 2008
