Dispatches SGIA Initiative Wins Award Fairfax, Virginia—SGIA’s community-building efforts in New Orleans—the SGIA Canal Street Initiative—have received national recognition for improving the American way of life. The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and The Center for Association Leadership (Washington-based organizations for the association industry) have added the SGIA Canal Street Initiative to the Honor Roll list of the 2008 Associations Advance America (AAA) program. In its eighteenth year, the AAA Awards recognize associations and industry groups that improve the quality of life in America with innovative programs in education, skills training, standard setting, business and social innovation, knowledge creation, citizenship, and community service. “Activities such as [SGIA’s] truly make America a better place to live,” said ASAE President and CEO John H. Graham IV, CAE. SGIA’s entirely volunteer initiative—which installed more than one hundred large format graphic panels over boardedup storefronts along Canal Street in New Orleans—was one of twelve programs that were selected for the ASAE recognition. An “All-Star” Campaign: New York, New York—Major League Baseball’s (MLB) seventy-ninth All-Star Game was held this past July at Yankee Stadium in New York City, and in an effort to celebrate the city and the final season at the iconic stadium, MLB launched “Statues on Parade.” The campaign featured forty-three eleven-foot-tall Statues of Liberty covered with logos and artwork related to the MLB teams. All thirty MLB clubs were represented on individual statues, as were other classic New York teams (Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, etc.) and baseball landmarks (Yankees Stadium and Shea Stadium). This unique signage venture was completed through the joint efforts of MLB and Forever Collectibles (www.forevercollectibles.com), a leading marketer and manufacturer of promotional products for the sports industry. The concept was developed in February, and from there, it was a dash to get the statues finished in time for the game. Forever Collectibles’ manufacturers in Asia set to work on creating a template for the statues, which took six weeks to complete. The original design of the Statue of Liberty had to be reworked to better accommodate the application of artwork. “We smoothed out some of the wrinkles in her dress, some of her seams, and some of her idiosyncrasies,” said Forever Collectibles CEO Michael Lewis. 16 Sign Builder Illustrated October 2008
