I still thought the planter box needed something—in this case, a set of address numerals and letters! Fortunately I had thought ahead and made a set of these numbers and letters out of Precision Board on the router back at our shop. I had also fine-sanded them, primed them with FSC-88 primer, and painted them with Ronan Ivory enamel. Gluing these letters to an uneven brick surface proved quite challenging (Photo 5). To maintain alignment, we had to work patiently and frequently check our work as we went along. ( Note: Sometimes these letters will slip, so it’s important to check your work often). When all the letters were finally straight and tight, we thought we could relax, but this turned out to be premature once we looked inside the planter box! (Note: Actually you should notice the inside of the planter box during the survey.) Staring back at us were weeds and compacted dirt! So we got back into our truck and scooted down to the local home improvement store. For less than ten dollars, we purchased three bags of clean mulch and filled the planter box with it. Doing this raises the value perception of your sign at the same time. This is a big plus when delivering a sign project—always remember the small details! We finished by escorting our soon-tobe-ecstatic sign client outside so she could enjoy the triumphant return of her once aged and worn-out sign, which had now been professionally restored and updated to current standards (Photo 6).
