Plastic letters can fit this need to a “t.” once realized that I could only make so much money with just my two hands and a paintbrush; I needed to branch out. Around this time, I came across a brochure from Gemini, Inc. (www.signletters.com) about making molded letters out of plastic, and I thought this would be a good way to increase my overall gross. (Note: I chose Gemini as my supplier because they’re from Minnesota, but there are other manufacturers who provide the same quality service and materials.) As it turns out, I sold more of these types of letters than I had ever expected. And there were added bonuses: They were fun and easy to work with, and since I love being outdoors, installations were right up my alley. Speaking of installations, there are many different types. You have plain installations, where you just glue the letter down. Then there’s the I combination all-mount system—which is a stud, a pad (which allows one to set the letters off the wall), and silicone. There are only two types of surfaces, though, on which you can apply these letters (although one does come across the oddball surface, like irregular brick). First is a corrugated metal building wall. The ribs are usually nine to twelve inches apart, about one-inch deep, and have beveled sides with flat sides between them. All other surfaces fall into flat applications— from masonry to sheetrock. (Note: Painted sheetrock is usually found in offices and new businesses.) For flat surfaces, I use the installation 2b pads with a dab of silicone and tape the letters to the wall. Once the silicone sets, I remove the tape and I’m done.
