Sign Builder Illustrated - October 2008 - (Page 51) (www.nexxuslighting.com) successfully completed the solid-state rotunda lighting project for the Shuttle Launch Experience. SV Lighting’s SAVI® LED Flood Strips and low-voltage power supplies are being used to illuminate displays that commemorate each NASA space shuttle mission since the program’s inception in 1981. The display is situated around a continuous spiraling walkway that patrons use to exit the ride. A railing above the displays houses the SAVI LED Flood Strips that illuminate individual plaques for each mission (which total 123 to date). The SAVI Flood Strip II high-brightness LED luminaire is designed for indirect or direct lighting in either indoor or outdoor use. Low voltage, flexible, and monochromatic, the SAVI Flood Strip has an excellent tolerance for vibrations and shock. Its extremely low energy consumption combined with the low voltage minimizes the effects of corrosion and electrolysis. The Flood Strip II is outfitted with LEDs powered at 24VDC and has a life expectancy of up to 50,000 hours. The design team, veteran NASA astronauts, and renowned attraction experts created this authentic experience, deploying sophisticated motion technology, special effects seats, and high-fidelity visual and audio presentations. This unique-in-the-world experience immerses visitors in the sights, sounds, and sensations of launching into space fully vertical. “We’re thrilled to celebrate the culmination of this phenomenal $60 million project by unveiling Shuttle Launch Experience to the public and inviting them to feel what the astronauts have felt and see what they’ve seen first-hand,” remarked Daniel LeBlanc, Chief Operating Officer of Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. “Not only will they experience the thrill of launching into space, but they’ll marvel at the spectacular view of Earth from space through state-of-the-art digital technology.” Shuttle Launch Experience was designed by BRC Imagination Arts (www.brcweb.com), the company that also designed the Apollo/Saturn V Center (which opened in 1997 at the Visitor Complex). BRPH Companies Inc. (www.brph.com) served as the architect and construction manager for the project. The crew cabin simulator was fabricated by Oceaneering International (www.oceaneering.com), while The Wheel Thing, Inc. (www.the-wheel-thing-inc) designed and engineered the crew cabin concept As mentioned earlier, SV Lighting supplied the LED Floodstrips and star ceiling equipment, while Technomedia Solutions (www.gotechnomedia.com) provided audio, visual, and show control. HW Davis Construction (www.hwdavis.com) served as the general contractor of the facility. — Brook DeWitt October 2008 Sign Builder Illustrated 51
