The sixty-foot-round base of the monument also serves as a “walk of fame” tribute to all Dover race winners and legendary drivers who make their mark at the track. The popular Miles the Monster has been portrayed as an intimidating, carcrushing creature that wreaks havoc on NASCAR’s most skilled competitors. He’s been molded into the winner’s trophy, playfully mimicked by victorious drivers, featured in a comic book, and replicated as an action figure. The story behind its “life-sized” creation—as well as the wrapping of the car in its massive clench—is just about as exciting as anything Dr. Frankenstein conjured up. Building a Monster The idea for the larger-than-life monster gained traction last summer when a committee featuring members of Dover International Speedway’s sales and marketing departments sparked the possibility while planning for the development of a new fan thoroughfare area at the track (the 360-foot-long, 64-foot wide Victory Plaza). “During this initial period, they came up with the concept of making Miles the Monster the focal point of [this] area,” explains Dover International Speedway Director of Public Relations Gary Camp, adding that they needed everything complete by late May in time for the track’s initial race in June. 54 Sign Builder Illustrated October 2008 PHOTOS: AB INSTALLATIONS.
