The committee decided to turn to Becker Morgan Group (www.beckermorgan.com) of Dover, Delaware, to complete much of the structure’s original design. ACI Composites, Inc. (www.acicomposites.com) was then brought in to construct the monument at its factory in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In October, they began the process by constructing a clay model built-to-scale (in order to mold the sculpture for later fabrication). When the monster’s look was finalized a month later, the ACI Composites crew started work on the full-sized creature. In late April (144 days later), ACI Composites finished the monstrous structure and placed it in its driveway. Officials then disassembled the monster and shipped it on six flatbed trucks to Dover International Speedway. Kent Construction Company (www.kentconstructionco.com) of Smyrna, Delaware, then stepped into the driver’s seat and handled all the on-site construction of Victory Plaza (including the Monster Monument base). It took one day for crew members to re-assemble the newly arrived monster pieces. The popular Miles the Monster has been portrayed as an intimidating, car-crushing creature that wreaks havoc on NASCAR’s most skilled competitors. They used a crane to put the large portions of the structure in place. (Note: Kent Construction crews erected the monster onto the seven-foot-tall monument base the same day it had been re-assembled.) It took twenty-one days for the ACI Composites design team to perform cosmetic repairs and final painting on-site. “The team spent the early part of May finalizing the monster by adding the fiberglass shell to give the monster his signature concrete, rock-solid look,” says Camp. “They depended on lifts and ladders to apply the outer fiberglass shell.” (Note: The structure also includes steel beams for support and a foam wrap.) Wrapping a Racecar UASG- and PDAA-certified vinyl application specialists AB Installations, Inc. (www.allstarbranding.com) of Sykesville, Maryland (and Fredericksburg, Virginia) was responsible for applying the graphic wrap to the racecar shell that would be placed in the October 2008 Sign Builder Illustrated 57
