His CU, he said, has long had a reputation “as a great place to save” and a place where “families bonded.” Perhaps some of that close-knit atmosphere is lost today, observed Campana, as some CUs “operate on a philosophy which has credit unions,” said Campana, who plans to participate in the 100th anniversary celebrations. He said he was particularly pleased that a piece of long-lost CU history was found in Industrial offices several years ago: two letters that credit union-pioneer Alphonse Desjardins of Canada had written about the CU charter to his great uncle. “The handwritten letters, quite brittle, plus photographs were found buried in a file cabinet drawer when we moved our old offices to our new location at Liberty Square,” Campana said. The documents are being turned over to America’s Credit Union Museum in Manchester, N.H. “I’m glad we have them for the celebration,” said Campana, a product of the Boston public schools with a bachelor’s degree in management and finance from Boston University. Campana also is a member of the Suffolk County Mortgage Review Board, appointed in 1997 by then Massachusetts Commissioner of Banks and FDIC Board Member Thomas J. Curry, and a trustee of Homeowner Options for Massachusetts Elders. He also is a former director and chairman of the Massachusetts Credit Union Share Insurance Corp. —jrubenstein@cutimes.com Roy Campana is a thirdgeneration leader of his Boston credit union. i come from Boston’s roslindale, a working neighborhood which was the home to police and firefighters who frequently came in to the credit union to borrow money, and so i remember how the credit union was doing good things for these people. -Roy Campana taken them far a field–to the outer limits.” Those cases are rare, he added, since most credit unions understand their roots and their commitment to their mission. Campana started as a file clerk-teller in 1973 and has worked in every role and controlled each facet of operations and management of ICU. “This is a great time for www.cutimes.com Credit Union Times, December 2008 35 http://www.swcorp.org http://www.swcorp.org http://www.cutimes.com
