Michael Jones says. “[Platinum’s] major use is in the tailpipe of our cars, cleaning emissions,” he explains. “It’s one of the few products of mining that [can lead to] a better environment.” Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Platinum Group concentrates on the development of mines in South Africa, “the heart of the platinum industry,” Jones says. The company, which was founded in 2000 and employs a staff of 50, has offices in both Canada and Johannesburg, South Africa. Platinum Group has mineral rights in South Africa’s Bushveld Igneous Complex, which hosts 80 percent of the world’s platinum production. The main focus of the company’s work, Jones notes, is in the Western Bushveld Joint Venture, a large area in the western limb of the complex. “We hold 67 square kilometers [there] in joint venture with a local company called Wesizwe,” he says. The venture satisfies the spirit and intent of the New Mining Act in South Africa, which “is designed to empower local South Africans that were effectively disenfranchised by the apartheid regime,” Jones says, noting that Wesizwe owns 26 percent of the property. “We own 74 percent and we’re the operator.” WINTER 2010 http://www.platinumgroupmetals.net http://www.exploration-processing.com
