Hooper founded Equipment Maintenance Services (EMS) Inc. in Gillette, Wyo. in 1984. In 1987, the company expanded its services to Phoenix to cover Arizona, California and the Mexico area. In 1989, EMS expanded its services to Farmington, N.M., providing similar services in the four corners region of the west. Today, the company is a subsidiary of Dowding & Mills Plc, an electrical and mechanical rebuild company. “We work closely with them,” Shop Controller Susan Giest says. “They produce coils for the large generators and motors used by the power plants.” The Gillette location employs 64 of the 114 employees companywide. This branch services clients in Montana, Colorado, North and South Dakota, and Wyoming. “The intense coal operations in the Powder River Basin accounts for about 30 percent of the nation’s coal reserve,” adds Todd Colbrese, the general manager of the Gillette facility. EMS/Gillette offers repair capabilities for all of the various mining equipment in the basin, including electric draglines, shovels, haul trucks, drills and support equipment. The area also has several large power generation plants. EMS has capability of extensive repairs on all of the large AC motors up to 12,000 horsepower (hp).
