George S. Mickelson Trail
The 109-mile-long Mickelson Trail follows
the historic Deadwood to Edgemont Burlington
Northern rail line. SD’s fi rst rails to
trails project. Enjoyed by hikers, bikers &
horseback riders. 14 trailheads, over 100
converted railroad bridges, four hard rock
tunnels & numerous services along the

Visitors to this sentinel mountain just east
of Sturgis should stop at the Bear Butte
Education Center. There you will learn the
geological story of this almost-volcano; its
role as a pioneer landmark; and its continuing
role as a holy mountain & founding
place of religion for several tribes of Plains
Indians. A two-mile trail makes the climb
to the 4,426-foot summit, which is also
the north end of the Centennial Trail that
meanders through the east-central Black
Hills and extends 111 miles south to Wind
Cave National Park. SD State Park annual

Rocky Point
State Recreation Area
Orman Dam creates the 8,000-acre Belle
Fourche Reservoir, which is used principally
for irrigation, with a new on-thewater
state recreation area built by the
SD Dept. of Game, Fish & Parks in 2008.
There is a 61-unit campground, comfort
station, dump station, fi sh cleaning station
and boat launching ramps. Reservoir
waters are a popular walleye fi shery, but
also yield channel catfi sh, black crappies,
smallmouth bass and white bass. Park entrance
license required. Camping fees are
$10 non-electrical and $14 electric sites.

Roughlock Falls State Park
Its idyllic setting in a side canyon to
Spearfi sh Canyon makes Roughlock Falls
one of the most-photographed spots in the
Black Hills. Little Spearfi sh Creek fl ows
down a spectacular chasm, then tumbles
off a 50-foot limestone ledge in a series
of lacy cascades. Operated by SD Dept.
of Game, Fish & Parks, there are shady
picnic facilities and rest rooms, along with
trails, catwalks and viewing nodes. Day
Use area only; no overnight camping. Park
entrance is not required. Located one mile
west from Spearfi sh Canyon Scenic Byway
at Savoy, on Forest Road 222. Open
year-round, with limited access in winter.
