State Park. As you enter
this magnifi cent reserve,
it takes only minutes for
the enchantment to begin
to beguile your senses. The
towering pines sheltering
the roadway, the swift
fl owing creeks with their
clear, sun-sparkled waters,
the massive cliffs and rock
ridges – it’s nature at its
most bewitching.
And taking center

stage in this transcendent
landscape is one of the most
powerful icons of the American
West – the magnifi cent
bison – shouldering his way
into view, unchallenged
master of this wild world.
The bison is the offi cial
logo of Custer State Park
and its main claim to fame
as a world-class wildlife refuge.
Nearly 1,300 buffalo,
one of the largest herds
anywhere, roam free in
this 71,000-acre park. The
Wildlife Loop Road winds
through the prime buffalo
range in the southeastern
part of the Park.
The huge bulls know
they have the right of way,
and you’ll be thrilled with
the upclose views of these
shaggy beasts as they
boldly amble across the
road, bringing traffi c to a
