cal sites and exhibits and
unbeatable opportunities
for outdoor recreation.
Eleven scenic hiking
trails wind through the
Park, including adventurous
treks through the
nearly 35,000-acre Peter
Norbeck Wildlife Preserve.
Within lies the Black Elk
Wilderness Area, the Black
Hills only wilderness. And
towering over the entire
expanse is Harney Peak, at
7,242 feet the highest point
east of the Rockies. Each
year, hikers, horseback riders
and rock climbers come
by the thousands to experience
nature’s splendor in
this unique environment.
If fishing is your favorite
activity, there are
four mountain lakes well
stocked with trout, crappies
and perch – Center
Lake, Legion Lake, Sylvan
Lake and Stockade Lake.
Nearby Bismarck Lake, a
part of Black Hills National
Forest, is another
favorite fishing spot. And
it’s hard to find better
outdoor camping sites
than the nearly 340 spots
available to tenters and RV
vacationers every night in
the Park’s 8 campgrounds.
Several campgrounds also
offer camping cabins with
heating, air conditioning,
electricity and a porch.
Plus, tucked away in various
corners of the Park are
four full-service resorts.
The Park’s Visitor Service
Division operates two visitor
centers. The Peter Norbeck
Visitor Center, along
U.S. Highway 16A, and
the Wildlife Station Visitor
Center along the Wildlife
Loop Road. Stop by to view
the park-related exhibits,
get trail maps, or gather information
on programs and
family-related activities. n
