Rebirth
(Continued from Page 153)
Old West history lives on in the
restored downtown of legendary
Deadwood.
drop, visible at every
corner, from the Victorian
homes perched on the
steep slopes surrounding
the downtown area to
the magnificent exteriors
and glittering interiors
of the grand brick structures
along historic Main
Street. And then there’s
the brick-paved streets,
period lighting and
old-fashioned trolleys to
further enhance the Old
West atmosphere.
A citywide, self-guided
walking tour allows
visitors to discover for
themselves the nooks and
crannies of yesteryear –
the buildings, landmarks
and Wild West personalities
behind Deadwood’s
legendary past.
Numerous museums,
such as the Adams
Museum and House and
the Days of ’76 Museum,
have been beneficiaries
of preservation funding
and today offer stellar opportunities
to enjoy,
or even study in detail,
the area’s rich history.
As for the gaming
boom – growth continues
as recent renovations of
the Frontier Club building
on Main Street and
the Martin & Mason
Hotel on Sherman Street
illustrate. One of the former
Homestake Mining
Co. buildings is on its way
to becoming the Deadwood
Mountain Grand
Hotel & Casino,
and The Lodge at Deadwood,
a new hotel and
convention center, opened
last fall. n
